-------------Original Message Dec 3rd 2017--------------------------------

Hello and Happy Holidays from SCLC!

We have been working hard to set teams/rosters and build out details for the 2018 Girls and Boys Youth Summer Travel Lacrosse Program. Thank you for your patience as we try to align both Programs for consistency whenever possible (now with ~185 prospective members).

As reminder, Springfield Cougars Lacrosse Club (SCLC) conducted try outs back in November. We’re pleased to announce the official Team Rosters for our 2018 Programs. Rosters can be viewed from each of our 5x Boys and 5x Girls Team pages. See www.springfieldlacrosseclub.com.

In case you missed it, our Club website already contains a detailed calendar of events, coaching designations and extensive program fee details (including installment payment options, extended payment options, financial need, etc.) among other useful information.

Also, the online registration process is now available. In order to secure your spot and avoid added registration fees, you must proceed to register each child online and process an initial deposit** ASAP, no later than Friday, December 15, 2017.

Unchanged from prior years, your child must be an active member of U.S. Lacrosse, details/links are available upon registering. The "Register Online" process can be found here (SCLC 2018 - Register Online Link).

The Register Online process has 4 registration options available to each child: 1> Boys Regular Player, 2> Girls Regular Player, 3> Developmental Boys WITH Uniform and 4> Developmental (Boys or Girls) WITHOUT Uniform. Please take note of each child’s assigned status (Player or Developmental) from the team rosters before you Register Online.

You may wonder why we need your registration commitment and deposit so far in advance. With more than $50,000 in program expenses to commit to in coming months, we simply cannot afford to wait for your “Yes” until after the Holidays. Please understand that SCLC has set its base program fees as low as possible to avoid an overall loss. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Lastly, should you have any questions about our program, roster designations, program fee details, website or registration, etc. do not hesitate to contact us at   .

Sincerely,

Board of Directors – Springfield Cougars Lacrosse Club, Inc.

** We’d like to encourage everyone to consider the “Bank Transfer” payment option through our Club website, in lieu of credit cards. For those who regularly access their banking data online, the Bank Transfer option (powered by Dwolla) is a simple and secure way to help our Club save a meaningful amount of fees. For reference, a bank transfer through Dwolla is typically less than $1.00 versus ~3% on credit card transactions.

----------------------ORGINAL MESSAGE SENT OCTOBER 15TH-----------------

This message is to re-introduce Springfield Cougars Lacrosse Club (SCLC) to the youth lacrosse community, invite you to JOIN US in Summer 2018 and, for tournament-ready BOYS GIRLS, to attend our free TRYOUTS in Nov.

With the continued growth of the summer tournament format, lacrosse is increasingly a year-round sport and more popular than ever. As most all clubs operate on a “for-profit” basis, summer options are limited, quite expensive, can be inconvenient and don’t give the instruction younger players require.

SCLC was established as a PA non-profit Corporation in 2013 to change this dynamic. SCLC’s objective is to operate summer club programs to provide all youth in Springfield School District (SSD) with numerous benefits, including:

·         a cost-effective and competitive tournament lacrosse experience;

·         allowing teammates to play together in a more intense/competitive format;

·         instructing players, year-round, in a consistent way; and

·         integrating Springfield’s exceptional alumni as coaches and advisors.

In 2017, our 4th summer program again proved that, in Springfield, we DON’T have to rely on for-profit Club’s to give our kids a quality summer experience.

·         Our BOYS Program, in its 4th season, had 110 members with 4x teams competing over a 6-week period in 3x local, high-quality tournaments.

·         Our GIRLS Program, in its 2nd season, had 72 members with 2x teams competing over a 6-week period in 2x local, high-quality tournaments.

In 2018, we are expecting to again have 4x BOYS tournament teams (G2-G7) and up to 3x tournament teams for GIRLS (G4-G7).

We are excited to invite all BOYS and GIRLS in SSD currently in grades K-7 to JOIN US in Summer 2018. The only thing we need from you NOW is to complete the below Google Doc so that we know who is interested and, for tournament eligible players, who is coming to our Tryouts.

Cougar Lacrosse - BOYS Summer 2018 Signup

Cougar Lacrosse - GIRLS Summer 2018 Signup

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unsure what a Tryout entails? Each Tryout is conducted in a group format, operated like a clinic and takes place at Halderman Field (570 West Springfield Road). Full gear is suggested and there will be parent information sessions.

·         BOYS Tournament Tryout (G2-7) is Sun. Nov. 5th from 3:00 to 4:15 p.m.

·         GIRLS Tournament Tryout (G4-7) is Sun. Nov 12th from 3:00 to 4:15 p.m.

Concerned because you have a conflict with the Tryout date/time? We hope to have as many as possible attend the Main Tryouts. For those with conflicts, we have/will schedule Makeup Tryouts and the Google Doc has fields to capture your preference if necessary. Nobody will be left out.

Concerned that your child may not be ready for tournaments? Our programs are designed to provide everyone with a chance to participate. No cuts will be made and everyone gets to be part of the Springfield team! For those not ready for competitive tournament play, we offer a Developmental option at a substantially reduced cost. Developmental status allows the member to attend 12 practice sessions and affords a uniform package option.

Concerned about team size and playing time? In 2017, BOYS and GIRLS tournament teams ranged in size between 20-21 players & 19-24 players, respectively. In 2018, we generally expect to organize teams by graduation year, though this could change and won’t be the same between programs. We are committed to controlling team size. We expect all teams to have no more than 22 players and we may employ a waitlist feature.

Concerned about non-lacrosse Summer conflicts? We recognize your child may have other sports or family commitments in June/July. We would never penalize a player for missing an event because of conflicts provided there is open communication and advanced notice given. Fortunately, our season calendars are detailed and published often 6 or more months ahead.

Unsure what SCLC membership entails? Membership is truly more than practices and games; it’s a connection to the Springfield Lacrosse Family. Your child’s membership is enhanced by a variety of members-only in-and-out of season benefits, including quality uniforms, scrimmages, free instructional clinics for parents/coaches/players, social events, discounted strength & conditioning, access to private instruction and free Family Wrapup Party.

Unsure about the financial & time commitment? We are a non-profit organization and many of us have children in the program and volunteer. We understand the demands on your time and money and we are consciously working to balance quality and value. In 2018, we are confident to say that our membership fees will NOT change and will be as follows:

·         BOYS = $550/Regular and $200/Developmental (unchanged from 2014)

·         GIRLS = $450/Regular and $200/Developmental (unchanged from 2017)

We have/will publish our 2018 rates, payment schedule options, coaching assignments and a detailed 2017/18 calendar online by November, well before anyone is asked to make a financial commitment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Springfield Lacrosse has a long history of success; accentuated by SHS Boys State Championships in 2017 and 2016. Through SCLC-sponsored programs, our children have greater opportunities to develop their lacrosse skills at an early age. Facilitating a bond between our alumni and the youth is a key ingredient. We believe the success of SCLC is vital to our ability to continue and build upon the proud tradition of Springfield Lacrosse.

Kyle Sweeney - Love Letter To Lax
by posted 10/08/2017

For those who missed it, 2017 saw the professional retirement of 2 of the greatest Springfield lacrosse alumni ever. In this edition, we feature Kyle Sweeney, SHS Class of 1999. Kyle retired from the MLL as the All-Time Leader in games played! Congratulations Kyle!

News article is below followed by a link to Kyle's Retirement Letter (great references and photos to his Springfield roots).

Philly legend Sweeney (@sprlax) announces retirement from pro lacrosse

Friday, 1st September 2017

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 9/1/17
From Press Release and Staff Report

New York Lizards defenseman Kyle Sweeney – a Springfield-Delco graduate and 3-time champion with the old Philadelphia Barrage who also starred for many years with the Philadelphia Wings – announced his intention to retire from Major League Lacrosse Thursday in a heartfelt letter posted in The Players’ Tribune. After 15 seasons in the league, Sweeney ranks as the all-time MLL leader in games played with 170.

Sweeney was selected in the third round by the Bridgeport Barrage in the 2003 Collegiate Draft. He followed the team when it moved to Philadelphia shortly afterwards. Sweeney anchored the defensive unit that helped the Barrage win the MLL championship in 2004, 2006 and 2007 and when the team folded in 2008, Sweeney moved to Washington Bayhawks for one game, then over to the Boston Cannons, which he led to win the 2011 MLL Championships. In 2014 he moved back to the Bayhawks, now located in Chesapeake. In 2017, he will begin playing for the Lizards.“At age 36, I know that Father Time is certainly catching up to me, but I can still play in this league,” Sweeney wrote in a story that appeared on The Players’ Tribune. “I probably could for a few more years.”

Sweeney was selected to the MLL All-Star Game nine times, been named All-MLL three times, and has won the Steinfeld Cup four times. He is ranked sixth all-time in groundballs with 500.

Sweeney finished his career with 41 goals, 27 assists and 68 points. Sweeney appeared in a total of 10 games with the Lizards this past season and picked up 17 groundballs. New York was the fourth different franchise that Sweeney played for in his career.

The Wings drafted Sweeney in the eighth round (83rd overall) of the 2003 NLL Entry Draft. He followed the team when it moved to Connecticut as the New England Black Wolves. He retired from indoor play in 2015.

Sweeney played for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2006 and 2010. In 2010, his team won the World Lacrosse Championship in Machester. He also played for Team USA in the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship.

Sweeney was a four-year standout at Georgetown University. He was named ECAC Rookie of the Year in 2000. He was a two-time ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, and three-time USILA All-American, and holds Georgetown’s all-time ground ball record with 229. He served as co-captain of the 2003. Academically, he was a double major in International Business & Marketing as well as minor concentration in Sociology.

Sweeney earned high school All-American honors, was selected as the All-Central League MVP and named to the All-Delaware County team as a senior at Springfield-Delco. He also played football and basketball at Springfield.

Sweeney also played for the original Duke’s Lacrosse Club’s men’s teams and was a key member of the “Four Horsemen” of standout defensemen as dubbed by founder Ebe Helm.

“I’ll always appreciate how our parents didn’t hesitate to support this new interest of ours,” wrote Sweeney in his retirement letter. “They agreed to buy us all the necessary lacrosse equipment (which wasn’t cheap) and to sign us up for the town league. Looking back as an adult, I realize how big a sacrifice it was. We were a middle-class family. My parents both worked full-time, and in fact they both had second jobs almost my whole childhood. My dad tended bar at night throughout my childhood and my mom managed a restaurant in the summers. They were selfless.

“We were a typical family in Springfield, a suburb outside of Philly where the cookie-cutter, single-family houses date back to the middle of last century. The community prides itself on hard work and family, and we love our sports (mostly football, basketball and hockey … and a little lacrosse). It’s almost a clichÃ, but because we didn’t have a lot, we valued each other that much more. That’s a big reason why a lot of my high school friends have either stayed in Springfield or returned there to raise their own families.”

2017 Season Ending Directors Message
by posted 07/26/2017

Hello all,

As our fourth summer with SCLC finished this past week, we just wanted to share some thoughts.

First, the Springfield Lacrosse Community is as strong as ever owing in no small part to the loyalty, support, dedication and enthusiasm of our members. This Club, our Club, is continuing to bring our community together. The bonds that grow between the players, alumni, HS players & their families are tangible and something to be proud of. These bonds will serve us well in the years ahead.

Second, we believe we are meeting our objectives and furthering our mission. Nearly 200 boys and girls in 2017 had quality practices; passionate hands-on coaching; challenging game play; fun and learning. We hope you agree and we’ll be asking for your feedback soon.

Third, we’re especially grateful for the opportunities SCLC provides our alumni. One of the biggest benefits of our model is the alignment of our alumni coaches & youth players. And the benefit here goes beyond the youth. It’s important for our HS and recent alumni to realize the positive role model they can be for others. Being involved in our Club enables them to be more confident, assertive and prepared for career and life in general. And it draws the Alumni back to our community regularly.

Fourth, its important to reflect on the fact that our Club is entirely volunteer driven. Without the year-round dedication of a few and the in-season support of many selfless volunteers, we could not put on such a quality summer program. THANK YOU!  Special thanks to Jessi Gougler, Mike & Deb DePetris and the Board of Directors for their tireless support of our program. If YOU feel a calling to join us in our mission, please let us know.

In closing, we know that you have a lot of Club Lacrosse choices, some of which have clear strengths compared to SCLC. When you evaluate the total package, however, we believe that SCLC offers the most compelling, well-rounded and cost effective opportunity for your child to have a positive summer lacrosse experience. We are thankful that you are with us and look forward to many summers ahead.

As we close out summer and begin a new school year, please remember to look out for one another and keep doing all the right things, on and off the field!

BE THE BEST & see you Sunday, August 6th at the Wrap-up Party!

Club Message - Week of July 10th

This message is to share the latest Club news and reminders.

NOTE - Throughout, text in BLUE denotes general Club info applicable to all members, while text in GREEN reflects Boys only content while RED text reflects Girls only content.

The past week really exemplifies what our Club is all about! Boys and Girls having fun and competing at a high-level. Young alumni working nightly to pass on their passion, respect and knowledge to the next generation. Volunteers coaching and organizing for Tournament needs in NJ and PA and families socializing, creating new bonds and strengthening existing ones. This is Springfield Lacrosse!

**Technical Issues** - We apologize as many Club website-generated email messages last week were both delayed and unnecessarily duplicated. A website upgrade by our host was to blame. Hopefully these technical issues are behind us at this point.

Girls Week #5 – 2x teams attended Summer Slam in Tabernacle, NJ this past weekend, as our Girls Program completed an 18-month journey to bring competitive summer tournament lacrosse to life. Congratulations to coaches, players and families involved; many of which were competing for the first time in such an event!

The week ahead is a “regular” practice week with special Play Day on Tuesday for U9Dev Grade 2/3 Team. Girls Play-Day parents and guests are asked to park on the Springfield Road front entrance as several boy’s teams also practice on Tuesday evening. Please send plenty of cold water as its looking to be hot all next week. See your Team Page for event details.

Boys Week #5 – Congrats to Team 2026 for competing in the very competitive NXT Cup scheduled on short notice due to cancellation of Patriot Games 26 division. The 26 Boys had their best showing of the season, going 2-3 on the weekend (with 2 losses by 2 goals or less), finishing in 4th place (out of 8 teams), beating a team from Dallas, TX and getting revenge win against SJ Shamrocks.

The week ahead is a “regular” practice week with all tournament teams (except 2026) preparing for the Patriot Games. Boys U9Dev Team also travels on Tuesday to scrimmage West Chester. Event dates, times and locations are unique by team so be sure to review your Team page for team-specific schedule and news.

NOTE – Boys teams that practice on Tuesday, July 11th are asked to park and enter Halderman from the rear entrance to accommodate Girl’s Play-Day event. Please respect our neighbors by not blocking driveways on Snyder Lane.

**Reminder** - Patriot Games Player Registration – All Boys tournament teams (except 2026) are attending The Patriot Games Summer Showcase, Saturday & Sunday, July 15th and 16th. All non-developmental players MUST be registered/waivered with the PG website. YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY IF THIS IS NOT COMPLETED. Each Team page has a bulletin with a link and more details.

^^NEW^^ - Patriot Games Venue Change & Schedule – As expected, the Patriot Games has moved sites to Del Co. SCLC Teams will now be competing at one or both of Penncrest HS and or Neumann University. Schedule is now live. Each Team page has a bulletin with details.

Also, please familiarize yourself with the PG website content including Venue Maps, Rules and Conduct. PG Directors emphasize the concept of “Honoring The Game” and they don’t hesitate to point out the good or bad publically. Remember, we all represent our town and each other!

**Reminder** - Club Wrapup Party with Special Guest – Please save the date for a relaxing Wrap-up Party on Sunday, August 6th (2–5 p.m.) at Crowell Park with the Sprinwgfield Lacrosse Community. All members and family are welcome to attend and we will hold our Alumni Award Ceremony with MLL and Team USA Superstar – Greg Gurenlian! RSVP link to come.

**Update** - Team Shop Merchandise Our May Team Shop fundraiser through BSN Sports has come in, and for those who responded to messaging last week, articles were delivered to your home by BSN. There are still ~10 families that did not respond and so we will be working to message you next week when our BSN rep returns from vacation.

This message is to share the latest Club news and reminders.

NOTE - Throughout, text in BLUE denotes general Club info applicable to all members, while text in GREEN reflects Boys only content while RED text reflects Girls only content.

Girls Week #1 – Our Girls Youth Summer Lacrosse Program starts on Wednesday evening. Please consult your Girls Team page(s) for complete information, including practice dates and times and roster assignments. Girls practice on the front field of Halderman, nearest to Springfield Road. Anyone who hasn't received their uniform and who is paid in full can pick it up at the first practice. Girls are to wear their new jersey or practice pinnie from last year to practice.  Practice pinnies (same pinnies as last years) will be sold for $20 if you need a new one.

Boys Week #2 – This week is our second together after a thrilling kickoff week punctuated by the SHS Boys capturing the PIAA State Championship for second year in a row. The week ahead is a “regular” practice week with a scrimmage/practice event in West Chester on Monday evening for the 4x Tournament Teams (all members attend scrimmage except there is no scrimmage event for U9 Dev team). The first Boys tournament (Meltdown) ends the week (tournament players only attend). Please review your Team page online for your team-specific schedule and news.

^^NEW^^ - Meltdown Player Registration. All Boys tournament teams are attending The Meltdown, Saturday & Sunday, June 17th and 18th. Please proceed to register all non-developmental players with the Meltdown Lacrosse Tournament website ASAP (link below). Each Team page has a news article with more complete details.

^^NEW^^ - Volunteers. Parents are encouraged to begin organizing for team specific tournament needs. There are many volunteer opportunities open, see our volunteering page under the “Boys Program” menu option from our home page.

**Reminder** - Extra Uniform & Socks. Extra socks are available ($10 each) and certain boys uniform articles in YXL and Adults sizes only. Send a message if you want to claim items.

##Important## - Weather Policy. When storms are possible, unless you have an onsite parent backup, we do not recommend that you leave your child during practice at Halderman Field. Unfortunately, we have no shelter to offer should the weather change suddenly. Please check the forecast often and talk with your child about your plans should you need to leave the area.

##Important## - Member Conduct. Any club’s reputation is a direct reflection of the judgment and character of its members. Fortunately, we have a great group of members. All SCLC members, including Coaches, Players and Parents are reminded that we all must always act with honesty and integrity and comply with US Lacrosse Code of Conduct (and rules of tournaments we participate in). Anyone with conduct-related problems, questions or concerns are invited to contact our Club Directors (contact info posted online) or submit a confidential inquiry online in our Feedback To Our Board page.
